FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES

The new Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (FMCB) created in 2020, initially denominated as the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine (DCBM), was created as a special unit in 2008, temporarily under the Office of the Rectory in order to ensure a period of installation of the new Medicine course.

  • This Faculty offers bachelor courses in Biomedical Sciences, masters and doctoral levels, as well as an Integrated Masters in Medicine.
  • Laboratories have been created to carry out cutting-edge research in the field of regenerative medicine, with a focus on stem cell biology and organogenesis, cancer cell biology and cell therapies. This line of research is led by a team of 11 senior scientists, which is expected to increase in the short term to a number of 18.
  • The Medicine course has unique and innovative characteristics, as it is the first 4-year postgraduate course in Europe outside the UK and Ireland.
  • The curriculum is based on problem-based learning and is the first program in Europe to offer clinical training clearly centered on General Practice. The course represents a significant leap in the 21st century for medical education in Portugal. The first batch of doctors was formed in July 2013.
  • The Integrated Masters in Medicine is part of one of the new anchor areas within the University of Algarve, which, if properly developed and promoted, will firmly place the University on the world map of Medical Education.
