Following a project conceived by the Algarve Biomedical Center and the start-up of the Algarve MARK6 protoryping, the company Hidrofer, from Vila Nova de Famalicão, will produce swabs for testing COVID-19.
A daily production of around 50,000 swabs is expected, which will strongly reinforce the National Health System's (SNS) response capacity in the face of the current pandemic.
Based on the ABC investigation, Mark 6 Prototyping, a startup linked to the University of Algarve, still produced around 700 swabs, however, the “lack of industrial capacity”, stressed Manuel Heitor, led to the partnership with Hidrofer, the company that will allow the mass production of swabs.
The swabs are thus the result of a partnership between the Clinical Academic Center Algarve Biomedical Center, the start-up Mark 6 Prototyping, the Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon, and the Hidrofer company.
