ABC-RI researchers won funding to develop scientific projects
2 Aug, 22

The scientific projects of two researchers from Algarve Biomedical Center Research Institute (ABC-RI), Sara Carvalhal and Mónica Fernandes, were recently selected for funding in the 2022 R&D Project Competition of the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).

The project led by Sara Carvalhal aims to explore the biological functions of the BUB1 gene in neurodevelopment, contributing to a better understanding of brain development and its size.

The project led by Mónica Fernandes focuses on the study of the role of the CITED2 gene in the biology of glioblastoma stem cells - an extremely lethal brain tumor, for which the therapeutic options are very limited. The proposed project may contribute to the development of new therapeutic strategies. These are two exploratory projects, each with a maximum funding of 50.000 euros.

ABC also congratulates Pedro Castelo-Branco, from ABC-RI, and project leader Graça Maria Leitão Ferreira-Dias, from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon, for granting funding under the same call, for development of a scientific project that aims to explore and evaluate the impact of epigenetic changes in the mare's endometrium. It consists of a scientific research and technological development project, whose maximum project funding is 250.000 euros.

Many congratulations and success to our researchers for their work in the health area!
