ABC-RI researchers won funding to develop scientific projects

2 Aug, 22

The scientific projects of two researchers from Algarve Biomedical Center Research Institute (ABC-RI), Sara Carvalhal and Mónica Fernandes, were recently selected for funding in the 2022 R&D Project Competition of the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).

The project led by Sara Carvalhal aims to explore the biological functions of the BUB1 gene in neurodevelopment, contributing to a better understanding of brain development and its size.

The project led by Mónica Fernandes focuses on the study of the role of the CITED2 gene in the biology of glioblastoma stem cells - an extremely lethal brain tumor, for which the therapeutic options are very limited. The proposed project may contribute to the development of new therapeutic strategies. These are two exploratory projects, each with a maximum funding of 50.000 euros.

ABC also congratulates Pedro Castelo-Branco, from ABC-RI, and project leader Graça Maria Leitão Ferreira-Dias, from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon, for granting funding under the same call, for development of a scientific project that aims to explore and evaluate the impact of epigenetic changes in the mare's endometrium. It consists of a scientific research and technological development project, whose maximum project funding is 250.000 euros.

Many congratulations and success to our researchers for their work in the health area!

ABC-RI researcher receives project of more than one million euros to develop therapy for rare and incurable disease

5 Jul, 22

Clévio Nóbrega, principal investigator at the Algarve Biomedical Center Research Institute (ABC-RI) and professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Algarve, has received a project a project of more than one million euros to develop a gene therapy for the Cockayne syndrome disease, a rare and incurable disease that mainly affects children, with a prevalence of about 2.7 per million births in Western Europe.

As there is, so far, no therapy that modifies the progression of the disease, the UAlg researcher's project aims to find in the genes a response that, if successful, could modify the progression of the disease and not just its symptoms.

Clévio Nóbrega and his research team aims, through the project “CureCSB – Development of a Gene Therapy for Cockayne Syndrome Type B”, to develop, over the next two years, a gene therapy for Cockayne Syndrome, type B, which reveals the potential to reach the stage of clinical trials and can reach the clinical area in the near future, changing the lives of patients and their families.

In the words of Clévio Nóbrega, principal investigator, “the path is long”, but the team leaves a guarantee: “we are working very focused so our wish is that the path can be covered in the shortest possible time and with the best results.”

For this purpose, the research group already has the support of specialists in both, the clinical and pharmaceutical areas, ensuring a close interaction with the regulatory authorities, in order to a future application of gene therapy in the context of clinical trials.

Developed within the Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC), this project is, for Nuno Marques, President of ABC, proof that “ABC-RI has the appropriate technology, team and recognition to contribute in a very fruitful way to the developments in medicine internationally”. The president guarantees that “the commitment to development and innovation is a winning bet, including regional and national economic diversification”.

Isabel Palmeirim, director of the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, shares the same conviction. She believes that this project is very important because “it reflects the vision of an academy increasingly focused on innovation, discovery and in dialogue with society problems”. As he states, “the University of Algarve and the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences will continue to develop their work in order to strengthen the country and the region, providing them with new skills in the health sector”.

This new funding opens up new perspectives to understand a poorly studied disease that could bring, in the near future, a new way of looking at the disease.

ABC congratulates Sara Carvalhal for the L’Oréal Portugal Medal of Honor for Women in Science

23 Mar, 22

Which neurons are responsible for the development of addictive behaviors, such as drug use? Can stem cell manipulation shed light on what causes microcephaly? What is the role of the Tejo River Estuary in the preservation of water birds? Can the simulation of small tumors in the laboratory help treat cancer?

These are some of the questions raised by the four scientific projects distinguished by the Medals of Honor L'Oréal Portugal for Women in Science, which in its 18th edition will support the research of Sara Carvalhal, Algarve Biomedical Center, Sandra Tavares, i3S - Institution of Research and Innovation in Health; Carina Soares-Cunha, Research Institute in Life and Health Sciences, University of Minho and Edna Correia, Center for Environmental and Sea Studies, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon.

With a PhD or post-doctoral degree in their areas of specialization, the researchers aged between 32 and 35 years were selected from more than 72 candidates by a scientific jury, chaired by Professor Alexandre Quintanilha. Each winner receives a prize worth 15 thousand euros, as an incentive for their research and work in the areas of health and environment. An initiative that aims, more broadly, to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable science and society.

Inauguration of the National Observatory on Aging in Alte

22 Mar, 22

It is on Nova da Igreja Street, in the village of Alte, in the former premises of the Cândido Guerreiro Professional School, that the National Aging Observatory (ONE) was inaugurated on Monday, March 21.

The presence of the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, Ana Mendes Godinho, and the Assistant Secretary of State and Health, António Lacerda Sales, were in Alte to underline the importance of this project, not only for the region, but to respond to the «new demographic paradigm» that constitutes the increase in life expectancy of the Portuguese population and the challenge of promoting active and healthy aging in the country.

As the President of ABC, Nuno Marques, explained, this initiative, which brings together three educational institutions (ABC – Algarve Biomedical Center, NOVA Medical School of Lisbon University and Porto University), was born because “there must be someone who observes, checks, analyze the data, which indicates how we are behaving over time, how we should act and how we can act in order to minimize the impact that we will have on Portuguese aging indicators».

The Minister of Labor said that this was «a historic day for Alte but also for Portugal» and highlighted the advantage of universities being associated with the project: «there are three centers of reference around research and aging, which is essential for us to have options well informed from the point of view of what are the critical areas of intervention, in order to have an increasingly active and healthy aging throughout life, and policies associated with longevity that are more focused and with more knowledge».
