Health is an essential component in a smart city

18 Nov, 21

The pandemic unraveled and expanded weaknesses in the health department which in many cases, can and should be solved by local and proximity governments. Along with the environment, mobility or efficient services, health is also a fundamental element to guarantee the quality of life of people in cities that are positioned as intelligent.

Integrated, efficient and sustainable health care networks, personalized and transversal to the entire community, will be fundamental in the smart cities of the future. Without the health and wellness component, supported by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence or the IoT, no city will truly be “citizen-friendly”.

The person in charge of ABC - Dr. Nuno Marques was one of those present at the debate on Health and Well-being, which started the afternoon at the Smart Cities Summit, where he presented some of the projects he is developing in the field of active aging. ~

Thank you Daniel Cartucho

The identity and strength of institutions is also due to the quality of cohesion of their leaders. In the case of ABC, from the beginning we realized that our capacity to develop and intervene in favor of the Algarve depended on being able to form good work teams, bringing together different personalities around common goals.

Therefore, when Dr. Daniel Cartucho, CHUA's General Surgeon of Portimão Hospital leaves the ABC leadership team, we come to publicly express our deep recognition for his dedication, enthusiasm and for the precious contribution he made to the growing affirmation of the ABC at a regional, national and international levels – putting his professional knowledge and his human quality, always selflessly, at the service of the public causes we embrace.

Thank you, Daniel Cartucho.

ABC brings to Portugal a videogame created with Marvel and Disney for physical rehabilitation

12 Nov, 21

The ABC - Algarve Biomedical Center will install a video game application center in Tavira next year, created by the Johns Hopkins University, with the elderly population in mind.

This is a Neuroscience and Neurology project, linked to active aging. It started with a Johns Hopkins University researcher named John Krakauer, who wanted to see if physical therapy treatments and other therapies were the best option for those who had a stroke or for those who lose abilities throughout life.

They launched a challenge to Marvel and Disney, and hired the two best workers from each company to create a video game with artificial intelligence mechanisms that reflects people's movements and improves their cognitive and physical abilities.

Later, the Johns Hopkins investigator pitched to ABC the idea of applying this to the community. In the first half of next year, there will be the first application center operating in the Algarve, in Tavira.
